With increased interest and support for maternal and child health issues, as well as the G8's new commitments to food security, it is also the time to address the nutritional needs of women and children. Malnutrition is a major contributor to the total global disease burden - under-nutrition is responsible for more than one-third of child deaths globally. For many women living with HIV, proper nutrition is a vital component to keeping their immune system healthy. The current worldwide economic situation threatens food security in many regions of the world, which can exacerbate nutritional challenges for mothers and children.
